Kawaii, meaning “cute” and “adorable” in Japanese is a fashion trend that began in the 1970s in Japan and is a whimsical and expressive aesthetic earmarked by colorful, playful, youthful styles; it was marked by the use of frilly skirts, pastel colors, oversized bows, laces and cute accessories to evoke innocence, simplicity, child-likeness and soon became an international phenomenon. Kawaii has evolved over the years with various substyles and in recent times social media platforms have made its aesthetic appeal accessible and greatly aspirational across the world. Here is a quick Kawaii reckoner to up your Kawaii quotient!!

Key Elements of Kawaii Aesthetics:

There are some key elements that mark Kawaii aesthetics and they are easily recognizable in its repeated use in Kawaii.

  • Color schemes: Pastels lie at the core of kawaii aesthetics: baby pinks, powder blues and soft lavenders are leading palettes and the dreamy hues evoke a sense of childlike wonder and help create the perfect backdrop forKawaii outfits and drawings.

  • Themes and motifs: Animals, especially cuddly ones, are a Kawaii culture’s cornerstone. Fluffy bunnies, wide-eyed kittens, and doe-eyed pups are replete in Kawaii. Stars, hearts, and rainbows bring in a whimsy quotient.

  • Cuteness and playfulness: The most important aspect of Kawaii is playfulness intertwined with cuteness. How one dresses to how one designs ones space and surroundings, Kawaii seeks to inspire a sense of delightand amusement!

Hello Kitty and Kawaii: Originated in 1974, Hello Kitty with her simplicity, cuteness and sweetness with the red bow on her left ear and no mouth is one of the most recognizable symbols of Kawaii culture globally. Created by Sanrio in classic Kawaii style with round face, minimalist features, bow, primary colors, the overall look evoked innocence, simplicity and kindness. The absence of the mouth is again characteristic of classic Kawaii, extending the invitation to project one’s thoughts and feelings to the character and making her more relatable across cultures and countries. With her phenomenal popularity on merchandise across the world, Hello Kitty has come to be recognized as the epitome of Kawaii, so much so that Japan named Hello Kitty in 2008 their official tourism ambassador (a first for a fictional character!), inviting the rest of the world to celebrate the country’s proud Kawaii identity.

The Hello Kitty Aesthetic: The Hello Kitty Aesthetic is a mix between kid core and Kawaii aesthetic. Kidcore celebrates childhood pop culture and fashion style that’s reminiscent of 90’s cartoons and bold prints and Kawaii is defined by playful, beautiful pieces with childlike sensibilities in pastel shades of lavender, pink, and blues and even in a darker Kawaii sensibility like in the case of Yami Kawaii who favours navy, black and darker colours.
